The ExHacienda Guadalupe is a 200-year-old farmhouse in the heart of the mezcal region of Tlacolula, which is used as a collaborative space that engages local communities with professionals in gastronomy, literature, and design projects. ExHacienda operates under the direction of designer Raul Cabra, writer Michael Sledge, and gastronomical journalist Frederick Jimenez. It is home to the Oax-i-fornia project that, over the past ten years, has connected the world of design with traditional crafts for culinary purposes in Mexico and beyond.

Oax-i-fornia

Is an academic project using play as a catalyzer for collaboration and exchange between artisans, designers, and artists since 2005. Directed by designer Raul Cabra, in collaboration with universities and individuals, the project is currently based at the ExHacienda de Guadalupe in San Jeronimo Tlacochahuaya, Oaxaca, and seeks, as its main goal, to broaden creative opportunities for local artisans through multidisciplinary and collaborative work with other professionals in visual and creative fields. The project provides spaces for ancestral traditions to assert themselves in contemporary world markets.

On Sunday, we will visit workshops of two LAZO artisans based in Teotitlan del Valle. The first stop will be at the workshop of Josefina Jimenez; she has dedicated herself to making tapestries in pedal loom with natural dyes since she was thirteen. She will demonstrate how she prepares natural dyes for the crafting of her rugs. The second stop will be at the workshop of José Hernández, a fourth-generation candlemaker. He will demonstrate every step in the making of his traditional candles.

Marca Negra

MMN’S mandate is to explore the diverse regions where mezcal is made, be it in Oaxaca or any other states in Mexico, to showcase some of the varied expressions of the most perfectly distilled spirit in the world. Completely unaltered, the same way it has always been consumed in the communities it originates, and with no adaptations or corners cut, while maintaining the age-old method that yields such complex and existing flavors, the spirit shows the utmost respect for the local traditions and environment. Every batch is truly tiny and unique, so what’s inside a bottle of Marca Negra is liquid art.

There are currently six labels of Marca Negra being offered–mezcal made with different varietals of agave–from diverse communities, all of which are distinct from each other.

The handprint on the bottle has been put there as a tribute to the mezcal makers, the Maestros, that, through their ancient knowledge and their craftsmanship, create this truly original spirit.
